What is iEmpty?

iOS doesn't allows you to put the application icons where you want on your homescreen grid: they must be « in single file ».

iEmpty allows you to add some special « empty icons » on your home screen that will look « invisible ».

This way, it will « shift » the next application icons on the homescreen grid, allowing you to position them anywhere you want on your home screen...

Additionnaly, iEmpty provides you a way to get a special « empty text » that you can use in many situations to set nothing as a label where it is usually required.

For all this, there is NO NEED TO JAILBREAK your device!

How to add empty icons? [PROCEDURE]

0. Check the prerequisites

> What are the prerequisites?

1. Screenshot your home screen

Take a screenshot of the last page of your home screen (without any icon on it).

> How to take the screenshot?

2. Upload this screenshot

Upload THIS screenshot picture to iEmpty, from this page.

iEmpty will process your screenshot to « extract » all the possible icons slots from it, and generate the corresponding icons that reproduce exactly your homescreen background (so they will look « invisible » once added on it).

3. Select an icon slot

Select an icon slot (the position where you want to set the empty space) on the home screen grid, from this page.

This will open on Safari a « special page » corresponding to the selected position.

4a. Bookmark this page

Add this page on your homescreen (WITHOUT modifying the default empty text), as a Safari bookmark.

This will add on your device's home screen the generated icon corresponding to the selected slot, without any text.
However, the icon may not be at the expected position.

> How to bookmark the page?

4b. Bookmark this icon with iCustom

You can use iCustom in order to make your empty icon launch an iOS application of your choice.

> How to use iEmpty with iCustom?

5. Position the icon correctly

Move the icon to its expected position (the selected slot on step 3) on the home screen grid.

As it reproduces exactly your home screen background, it will look « invisible »!

How to display the mobile version of a website on Safari?

If you are browsing iEmpty using Safari on your iOS device as expected, everything should work well...

However, if you are browsing the « Desktop version » of the iEmpty's website, you will NOT be able to generate your blank icons.

This « Desktop version » is the default mode when you are using an iPad running « iPad OS » (iOS 13+ on a compatible iPad).

iOS 12 and below

On Safari, tap and hold on the “Refresh” button at the end of the URL bar and select “Request Mobile Site”.

iOS 13 and above

On Safari, on the “Aa” icon at the beginning of the URL bar and select “Request Mobile Site”.

You can also force mobile version by default (Settings > Safari > Settings for websites > Request Desktop Site > All websites > OFF)

> More informations here.

How to choose between layouts on iPadOS?

If you have an iPad running iPadOS (iOs 13+ on a compatible iPad), you can choose between different kind of layouts for icons on your home screen.

  • “Bigger” layout:
4 rows / 5 columns of icons on your home screen, with bigger icons than “More” layout
  • “More” layout:
5 rows / 6 columns of icons on your home screen, with smaller icons than “Bigger” layout
  • “More” layout + widgets:
“More” layout with the “today view” (widgets) displayed on the left side of the home screen

See: Settings app > Display & Brightness > HOME SCREEN LAYOUT

How to take the screenshot?

1. Go to « edition mode »

On your home screen, press on any icon and hold it until all the icons on the screen start to « jiggle ».

2. Clean the dock (optional)

If you want to put empty icons on the dock slots too, move all the icons outside it, so the dock will be empty.

3. Go to the last page

Slide the home screen pages to display the last one. It will be empty, without any icons on it.

4. Take the screenshot

Press simultenaously the « Power » + « Home » (or « Volume Up ») buttons, depending on your device.

This will save the screenshot into your « Photos » app.

> More informations here.

How to bookmark the page?

1. Tap Safari's sharing button

This is the « » icon on the Safari's toolbar.

2. Choose « Add to home screen » action

If you don't have this option, see here.

3. Tap « Add »

If the button is disabled, see here.

The page's bookmark is added to your home screen with the provided icon, as a shortcut to it.

> More informations here.

How to move or remove an empty icon?

1. Go to « edition mode »

On your home screen, press on any icon and hold it until all the icons on the screen start to « jiggle ».

2a. Move the icon

Like for any other iOS application, tap and hold the icon and move it to the desired position on the home screen.

2b. Remove the icon

Like for any other iOS application, tap the cross on the icon's top left corner to remove it.

> More informations here.

How to quickly add the same icon again?

Each empty icon added on the home screen is also a link to the page used to add it.

So you just need to tap on an existing empty icon on your home screen to come back to its special page and add it again as a bookmark on your home screen to create a new empty icon for the same slot/position!

How to update existing empty icons after home screen update?

If you already added empty icons and changed your home screen background, your existing empty icons will not match your new home screen anymore (they will become visible).

1. Upload the new screenshot

Follow the upload procedure as usual: take a screenshot of your new home screen background (without icons) and upload it on iEmpty.

2. Update the existing empty icons

You just need to tap on each 'old' empty icon already on your home screen to update them... Super easy!

It will display the « special page » corresponding to the old icon position, but with the new generated icon. Wait for the complete page loading and quit Safari : this should be enough to update your old icon!

How to use iEmpty with iCustom?

My other website iCustom can use your generated empty icon to make it launch an iOS application: so cool!

1. Tap the « » menu on the « special page » of the selected icon slot (step 4 of the procedure), instead of adding id directly to your home screen.

2. You will be redirected to the iCustom's configuration page, with your invisible icon data already filled

3. Choose an application to launch using your icon and follow the instructions to add it on your homescreen

Tap on the invisible icon will launch an iOS application of your choice, but in case you change the wallpaper set to your homescreen, you'll need to remove your previous empty icon and add it again from scratch (no automatic icon update).

Why using cookies?

iEmpty uses cookies to work, in order to remember you and find your empty icons.

So it is necessary that you allow cookies on your device (or this may not work properly) and that you don't delete them (or you'll loose your generated empty icons).

Please ensure that you allow cookies on your iOS device: Settings > Safari > Accept cookies

A cookie is a tiny file stored on your iDevice.
It allows the iEmpty website to recognize you when you're coming back and to remember the location where your generated empty icons are located on our server.

No personal informations are stored or shared during this process, we just give you a random number to recognize you.

Why keeping icons only 7 days?

The cause

iEmpty is a hobby for me and I provide the service for free, but I have to pay for the hosting.

Ads on the website allows me to pay that hosting, fortunately. But many people are coming everyday and upload things on the server and my hosting disk space is not unlimited... and upgrading it has a cost.

> So I can't keep all uploads of every user « forever »!

The consequence

I choose to automatically delete uploaded screenshots and icons not accessed for more than 7 days, to save space on the server.

So then you'll need to upload your screenshot again to make new icons or keep the existing ones up-to-date...

Note that this could unfortunately leads to problems like empty icons becoming visible...

The solution!

I launched a « premium » feature allowing people that like my work to suppport me on buymeacoffee.com.

The first goal of that is to show me that you like what I did and the time I spent into it.

> You can just « buy me a cup of coffee », or do more: « become a member ».

When becoming a « member », I reward you back for your great support with exclusive premium features... like keeping your empty icons « forever »!

Why new features are ONLY for premium users?

I understand that you may be asking that, and that you may feel cheated or feeling some frustration by seeing new features that you can't access.

I always tried to be transparent with you, so I will try to be like that again now!

The context

I created iEmpty 10 years ago, and spent MANY time since to make it evolve and keep it up-to-date the best I can so you can still enjoy it.

After that, since many years, I didn't made new features, because « it still works as-is » and because I didn't had enough time and motivation to implement some cool ideas I had to make it more « user friendly ».

But at the beginning of 2020, I added a « Buy me a coffee » button, by curiosity, just to see what will happen...

I was very surprised to see some people giving me a few bucks, because they really enjoy iEmpty.

The membership & their rewards

Then, when buymeacoffee.com made a new « membership » feature, I activated it too, always by curiosity.

I was again incredibly surprised to see dozens of people subscribing for a monthly or yearly subscription. I didn't expected that!

So I wanted to reward them back for their great support. And I decided first to remove all adds for those users.

Then it motivated me to start new developments for ideas I never took time to do before, and I decided to reward the people that supported me with these new « user friendly » features.

For example the ability to keep their icons more than 7 days, or the multi-selection mode to save time when adding some empty icons.

Why? This is unfair!

No, I don't think so...

If you're wondering why you « have to pay » for these features whereas it was «free before », I will explain it to you like that:

  • iEmpty is still FREE to use
  • it still have the SAME features than before, for free
  • it also have NEW features that didn't exist before, since the ability to support me throught buymeacoffee.com
  • without this support, those features should have NEVER been made
  • thanks to this, free users can also USE A PART of these premium features, for free

So in fact, thanks to premium users that supports my work, iEmpty becomes better for everyone, even for free users.

But of course, the full advantage of new features is for premium users that made it possible thanks to their financial support.

In my opinion, you don't have to « pay for » things that were free before, but you can support my work if you like it, and be rewarded back by exclusive features, because I want to thank you for that.

One last thing...

I will always in the future keep technical updates free for everyone (like updating icons positions with new iOS releases or new iPhone models).

Don't worry about this!

Only new « comfort » features should have a restricted access for premium users.

Empty text FAQ
How to get the empty text and use it? [PROCEDURE]

Before all, go to this page.

1. Select the empty text

Click the « Select » button to select the special empty text.

2. Copy the empty text

On iOS, you should have the contextual « Copy » option displayed. Click it to copy the invisible text to your clipboard.

On other systems (Android, MacOS, Windows, Linux, ...), use the appropriate « Copy » command.

3. Use the empty text

You can use it on iOS but also on many other systems to put empty labels anywhere it is not allowed!

  • iOS folder: edit a folder (long tap it) and paste the empty text as the folder's label
  • iOS bookmark: bookmark a Safari website on your homescreen and paste the empty text as the bookmark's label
  • Windows shortcut: create a shortcut on your desktop, and paste the empty text as the shortcut's label
  • ... and more!

Test it anywhere you like to have « no label », contact me to share tips where you used it, and share the tip around you on social networks!

Troubleshooting
Upload: Incorrect screenshot resolution

When trying to upload your screenshot image, you get an error saying that its resolution is incorrect.

Check that you followed this procedure correctly.

This is often because you uploaded the original picture you installed as your homescreen wallpaper, and NOT the screenshot of it once installed as described in the procedure.

Upload: Interruption

When your screenshot image is uploading, the request is interrupted and you get an error.

Don't do anything during file upload!

Any action from you can stop the upload request and make it fail.

  • don't refresh the Safari tab / page
  • don't quit the Safari tab / page
  • don't open the control center
  • don't go to multi-tasking mode
  • don't open another app
  • don't switch your network (WIFI <-> Mobile)
  • don't go to airplane mode
  • DON'T DO ANYTHING... WAIT! :-)
Choose icon: uploaded screenshot has gone

When you come back to the page where you choose one of your empty icon to add, you don't find back the homescreen screenshot you previously uploaded.

Note:
This can lead to problems like your existing empty icons becoming visible again... (learn more).

1. This is normal!

This could happen if you intentionnally deleted your screenshot and icons using the icon on it.

> Follow this procedure again to generate new icons.

2. Check your cookies

This could also happen if you use Safari in « private mode », or if you block/disabled/deleted your cookies manually.

> Follow this procedure again to generate new icons.

3. Check your icons age

When you generate your empty icons using iEmpty, they will be stored on the server for 7 days.

After this delay, they will be automatically deleted (see why!).

> Follow this procedure again to generate new icons.

OR

> Become a premium user to remove this limitation and keep your icons « forever »!

Bookmark: empty icon to add is missing

When you visit the « special page » corresponding to an empty icon to add, you get a message saying: « Unable to identify your icon! » or « The icon you asked doesn't exists anymore! ».

Note:
This can lead to problems like your existing empty icons becoming visible again... (learn more).

1. This is normal!

This could happen if you intentionnally deleted your screenshot and icons using the icon on it.

> Follow this procedure again to generate new icons.

Bookmark: Can't find the « add to home screen » option

From the Safari mobile browser, you don't find where is the « add to home screen » option.

This could be hidden in the « more... » option.

  • tap the « » sharing button of Safari
  • slide to the end of the options (bottom line)
  • tap the « more... » option
  • select the « Add to home screen » option and move it to the top of the option's list
  • tap « OK » to validate
  • you now have the « add to home screen » option available
Bookmark: Unable to add to home screen

When trying to bookmark the page, the 'Add' button is disabled.

Cancel the operation and try again.

Bookmark: Wrong icon displayed

When trying to bookmark the page, the icon to add is not the expected one (thumbnail of the page instead of your custom empty icon).

Cancel the operation and try again.

Please ensure to wait that the page is completely loaded before trying to add it to your home screen as a Safari bookmark.

Empty icon: Incorrect brightness

After you add the empty icon as a bookmark on your home screen, you see that the icon is not really « invisible », because it seems a little brighter or darker than the home screen background.

1. Check that you followed this procedure correctly.

This can occur when you uploaded the original picture you installed as your homescreen wallpaper, and NOT the screenshot of it once installed as described in the procedure.

2. Reboot & update icons.

Sometimes, some users had this kind of problems without any « good reasons »... They fixed it by rebooting their device. Sometimes they also needed to update their icons (tap on them) or install them again from scratch (following the procedure again).

Empty icon: Incorrect position

After you add the empty icon as a bookmark on your home screen, you see that the icon is not really « invisible », because it is not exactly aligned with your home screen background.

1. Check that you disabled the « parallax » effect.

Set « Reduce motion » to 'ON' (from Settings > General > Accessibility)

When reduce motion in 'OFF', your icons will move slightly on your home screen when you move your device, so they will not be always well aligned with it.

> More informations here

2. Check that your iOS version is supported

When a new iOS version is released, sometimes the icons positions on the home screen grid change for some devices.

> Check here that your device / iOS version is supported

If you think it is not supported, please follow the instructions to contact me so you can help me to update iEmpty quickly for everybody!

Empty icon: my empty icon changed and is now the iEmpty logo

When you accidentaly (or not) tap on an already added empty icon, it brings you back to the « special page » you previously used to add it.

After that, your invisible icon updates itself and becomes the iEmpty logo like that :

Cause :
Your empty icon expired or has been lost...

Consequence :
As your icon does not exists anymore, we falls back to the iEmpty's website logo as the favicon of the page. The default iOS behaviour is to also update all the corresponding icons bookmarked on your homescreen, so they become visible again...

> Check here how to fix that
